Making Soy Candles At Home
The Easy Way
Here's all you need:
*Each kit contains 1 pound of pre-dyed, pre-scented soy wax, 6 wicks and candle making instruction sheet.
1. Choosing a container for your soy candle.
Select the type of container that you want to pour the soy candle wax into. This can be a regular glass candle holder, wine goblet, fruit jar, metal or ceramic container or even a votive holder. You will want to make sure that the container has a flat bottom inside so the wick has a stable surface to sit on. While choosing your container, keep in mind that you will fill the container to 1/4" to 1/2" below the height of the wick that is provided with your kit.
Please note: I have tested my soy wax in many different containers and have experienced NO breakage or cracking with the containers I tested. However if you choose an expensive or thin glass container you do so at your own risk. You are advised to follow the soy candle making instructions page carefully.
2. Determine the number of wicks to use.
If the top opening of the container you want to use is 2 3/4 inches or less you can use one (1) wick. If the top is more that 2 3/4 inches, you will want to use three (3) wicks. Small square containers work well with two (2) wicks.
Tip: You want the heat from the burning wicks to melt the wax enough to create a "melt pool" that will reach the edge of the container, so be sure to use enough wicks to achieve this. If you think you have made a mistake you can simply reheat the soy candle wax and start over with more or fewer wicks.
3. Pouring the soy candle wax into the candle container
- Wash and dry your selected container(s) ahed of time and place them on waxed paper or newspaper to catch spills. (Soy wax for making candles will clean up easily with a hot soapy dish cloth.)
- Remove the lid from the microwave-safe container of soy candle wax.
- Place the soy wax kit container in your microwave and heat the soy candle making wax until it liquifies. Start by setting the microwave at three (3) minutes for a new, full container. If the soy wax is not completely melted you can stir it, breaking up any chunks. If necessary, pop it back in to the microwave for 30 seconds and check it again. The wax should be completely liquified in a maximum of five (5) minutes. Microwave ovens vary by power rating, however, this container of wax should be completely melted in less than five (5) minutes. It is IMPORTANT to melt the wax completely but DO NOT OVERHEAT! Do not heat it above 200° F as it could ignite. The wax should be about 150°-160° F when completely melted.
- Carefully remove the container from the microwave. Be careful as the wax and bottom of the container will be HOT.
- Allow the container of soy wax to cool down until the temperature reaches about 120° F or less. Depending on your room conditions, this should take about 15 minutes.
- Pour just enough wax into your container to cover the bottom by about 1/8" deep.
Set the desired number of wicks into the freshly poured soy wax and let the soy wax set up to hold the wick(s) in place.
- Slowly pour the soy wax into the container(s), making sure the wicks remain straight.
- Let the soy candle making wax completely harden (set up) before moving or lighting the candle.
- Once your soy wax candle is set up, trim the wick back to 1/4 inch before you light it.
- Any remaining wax can be stored in its original container, ready for you to create another candle whenever you like.
Note: It is not necessary to use all of the soy candle making wax at one time. If you want to refill your container or make another scented soy candle at a later time, simply follow the above instructions reducing the heating time with the smaller amount of soy candle making wax. It will obviously take less time to melt a partial container of soy candle wax.
4. Enjoy your Soy!
You have created a beautiful soy wax candle of your own. You'll really love the awesome scents and vibrant colors that have made our microwavable soy wax candle kits famous. Be sure to trim your wick to 1/4 inch each time you light your candle. You will love your 100% soy wax candle because it will burn without the ugly black soot that paraffin candles produce.
Candle Safety Precautions!
As with any candle, the candles that you make yourself should be used safely to avoid injury
- Always keep a burning candle within sight. Extinguish all candles when leave a room or before going to sleep.
- Never burn a candle on or near anything that can catch fire. Keep burning candles away from furniture, drapes, bedding, carpets, books, paper, flammable decorations, etc.
- Keep candles out of the reach of children and pets. Do not place lighted candles where they can be knocked over by children, pets or anyone else.
- Trim candle wicks to 1/4 inch each time before burning. Long or crooked wicks cause uneven burning and dripping.
- Always use a candle holder that is heat resistant, sturdy and large enough to contain any drips or melted wax. Be sure the candleholder is placed on a stable, heat-resistant surface.
- Keep burning candles away from drafts, vents and air currents.
- Keep the wax pool free of wick trimmings, matches and debris at all times.
